Alle englischen Absätze standen so in dem Fragebogen, der im MUD Xyllomer ausgefüllt werden konnte; die deutschen Überschriften wurden für diesen Überblick eingefügt.

Der einleitende Text

This questionnaire is part of a social study about roleplay in the MUD Xyllomer.

You are asked to answer some questions about you (the player), and your character(s).

Everything is strictly anonymous and you will not have to face any consequences for your answers.

The data gathered will form part of my junior thesis at the University of Giessen, Germany.

The result of this questionnaire will be presented on one of the boards later, so you will be able to see the results of your effords. :)

You may answer in English or German.

Please fill out this questionnaire one time only, even if you have several characters. You can answer some questions for each of your characters, but the data will be worthless if individual players submit multiple questionnaires.

Please answer honestly and do not write nonsense. If you do not know how to answer or do not wish to answer a given question then please simply write "I don't know" or "No comment".

Please do not talk with other players about your answers and do not ask them what they wrote down. When this questionnaire is finished (on december 12th) you can chat about it as much as you like.

Nearly all of my questions are directed to mortal characters and not to wizard characters. Those wizards who participate in this questionnaire should answer for their main mortal character(s).

Some questions are rather complex; in these cases, you are welcome to give longer answers, or to give different answers for all/some of your characters.

Please refrain from naming your characters, or giving the names of or revealing personal information about other characters/players.

Please try to answer as precisely as possible.

Remember: this is a social study, mainly to be read by non-mudders, so please try to answer as clearly as possible.

Take your time to answer this questionnaire. You will need at least five or ten minutes (more, if you so choose) for it, so do not start now if you are in a hurry.

I have divided the questionnaire into four parts with about six questions each.

There are four parts of this questionnaire:

Der Fragebogen

    Part One: Information about you, the player

  1. How old are you?

  2. Are you male or female?

  3. In which country do you live?

  4. What is your educational level? (e.g. current year of school/university, high-school diploma, Bachelor's degree.)

  5. What do you study / What is your job/work?

  6. From where are you usually logged in? (home, work, school...)

    7. Part Two: Information about your relationship to MUDs / Xyllomer

  7. When did you start to MUD, when did you start to play Xyllomer?

  8. Why do you mud? What do you like about it?

  9. How many hours per week/day do you usually spend mudding?

  10. How many muds to you play currently? Roughly what percent of your mudding time is spent on Xyllomer? Are you logged in on several muds at the same time?

  11. How does mudding affect your real life and your social relationships (your work, your friends, your study)?

  12. How many characters do you have, and how often do you play each of of your characters (i.e. roughly what percent of your playing time is spent with each character)?

  13. Do you have cross-gender-characters? If yes, why do you play them and what were your experiences?

    14. Part Three: Information about your roleplay

  14. What is your main interest in mudding (e.g. highlevel-character, exploring the virtual world, roleplay, social aspects or player-killing...) and why?

  15. What are personal aims of your characters? (strong character, high rank in a guild, social status, family ...)?

  16. How important is roleplay for you and what does good roleplay mean to you? What kind of roleplay do you like?

  17. Does your character's personality differ in important points from your own? How? (If you have several characters, then answer for the most important of them.)

  18. What is/are your character's relationships towards the good/evil situation in the mud? What kind of characters do you play? Do you prefer to play good or evil characters?

  19. Would you prefer Xyllomer to place more importance or less importance on roleplaying, or are you happy with the current level? Please give concrete situations where you feel things could be bettered in this regard.

    20. Part Four: IC and OOC

  20. How clearly do you differentiate between ooc and ic? Do you sometimes take ic-things personally? Do you treat chars whose players you personally know differently from other characters? If so, how? Do you have problems keeping the friends/enemies of each of your characters seperate?

  21. What do you think of cheating? How often do you cheat? Do you report bugs that could be abused? What is cheating in your eyes and what is not? (e.g. mixing knowledge of your characters, helping your second characters directly and indirectly, avenging death/insults to one of your characters with another)

  22. For players: What do you think about the wizards? What do you think is their "job"? How well do they do it? What kind of problems do you see between wizards and players (if there are any)? What is your opinion about the latest major changes?

    23. For wizards: What do you like about your wizard-"job"? What is your general opinion about players?

    Both: What kind of problems do you see between wizards and players (if there are any)? What do you say about code-changes in Xyllomer?

  23. Are you sometimes frustrated because of ic-events? What don't you like about other mudder's roleplay?

  24. Do you have an ooc-interest in meeting other players at MUD-parties? Have you ever been at a MUD-Party? If yes, what were your experiences? Do you want to visit (more) MUD-parties in the future?

  25. Further comments and explanations: Please note here any of your opinions about roleplay that did not fit into any of the other categories above.
